Switchgear installation and service

Switchgear is where a commercial or industrial property takes delivery of its power and decides where it goes. When it is undersized, obsolete or failing, everything downstream of it is affected.

Installation and replacement

We install and replace switchboards, distribution panels, disconnects and metering sections for commercial and industrial properties. Replacement work is usually driven by one of three things: the equipment has reached the end of its service life, the building load has grown past what it was specified for, or parts are no longer manufactured. Any of those is a reason to plan rather than wait, because unplanned switchgear failure takes a building offline and the lead time on replacement equipment is rarely short.

Working around an operating building

Almost none of this work happens in an empty building. We plan the outage before we plan the installation: what has to stay energised, what can be transferred temporarily, which night or weekend window causes the least disruption, and what the fallback is if something does not go to plan. We coordinate with the utility where the service entrance is involved, because their schedule usually sets the date rather than ours. You get the sequence in writing before anything is disconnected.

Service, testing and corrections

Not every job is a replacement. We service existing gear, replace failed breakers and components with the correct listed parts, correct labelling and arc-flash signage, and repair the damage that heat and age produce at connections. Thermal inspection frequently finds a loose or corroded connection heating up long before it fails outright, which is the cheapest moment to deal with it. If we find something that genuinely cannot wait, we will tell you plainly and separate it from the work that can be scheduled.

Common questions

Can this be done without shutting the building down?

Rarely in full, but the outage can almost always be shortened and moved to a time that suits you. Some work can be staged so only part of the building is affected at a time. We tell you exactly what has to go dark and for how long before you commit, rather than discovering it on the night.

Our panel brand is obsolete. What are the options?

For some discontinued equipment, compliant replacement breakers are no longer made. Reconditioned parts exist but carry their own risk and are not always acceptable to an insurer. In most cases replacing the section or the board is the sounder answer. We will lay out the options with their real trade-offs rather than pushing you straight to the largest one.

Do you handle three-phase equipment?

Yes. Three-phase service, distribution and equipment connections are a normal part of our commercial and industrial work. If you are specifying new machinery and are not sure your existing service will support it, we can assess that before you commit to the purchase.
